FAYETTEVILLE BASED ENGINEERING FIRM RECOGNIZED FOR ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE ON SPRINGDALE LIFT STATION

Fayetteville , Ar. -- The Fayetteville based engineering firm of McGoodwin Williams & Yates, Inc. has been honored by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Arkansas for the firm’s design of the Benton Farm Lift Station completed in November of 2005 for the city of Springdale .

The firm received an Engineering Excellence Honor Award, an annual award recognizing the “Fostering of Excellence in Engineering Design in Arkansas .”  The award process measures both innovative design and sustainable engineering. The lift station resembles a dairy barn, complete with red walls, metal roof and cupola with a rooster weather vane.

“Our concept was to create a lift station that would blend as seamlessly as possible with the surrounding agricultural properties, while also providing a cost-efficient municipal wastewater service to an area of projected high growth,” said Brad Hammond , president of McGoodwin Williams & Yates. “By taking into consideration the aesthetics of the highly visible lift station, this project sets an example of how such structures can be completed economically and still address the aesthetic desires of the community,” Hammond said.

The $2 million Benton Farm lift Station was designed to serve the northwest portion of Springdale and much of the city of Lowell for over 20 years as well as provide aesthetic benefits that would compliment property values of the area.

To best accomplish the design concept, McGoodwin Williams & Yates’ architects used images of nearby agricultural structures as a baseline while working with the firm’s engineers to create an efficient lift station that would also address additional community concerns. To mitigate noise to nearby residents, the emergency generator is housed inside the station, and the generator room is lined with acoustical panels to further dampen the sound.  An odor control system is included, and the odor control chemical tanks are also housed inside the building.

“We’re thrilled with the Benton Farm Lift Station, said Rick Pulvirenti, director of engineering for Springdale Water Utilities. “This project exemplifies how the application of a simple concept to the complex growth of our expanding community can be done in a manner that adds both aesthetic and real value to the surrounding properties.”

The Benton Farm Lift Station is located in the northwest area of Springdale within a 2,800 acre area of the town that was annexed in 2000, but which contained no sewer infrastructure.  The station is one component of Springdale ’s North Side Sewer Facilities Improvements Program.

McGoodwin Williams & Yates was honored also in 2006 with the national Grand Conceptor Award from the American Council of Engineers for the Beaver Water District Raw Water Intake Project. This project was done in alliance with the engineering firm Montgomery, Watson, Harza of Sacremento, California .
